How to access interpreter services for free
For: Aboriginal people in Victoria who need language support
Free interpreter services available for Aboriginal people in Victoria — for Centrelink, legal, health, and government services.
You have the right to an interpreter
Government services, hospitals, Centrelink, courts, and police must provide a free interpreter if you need one. This is the law. You do not have to use English if you are not comfortable with it.
For Centrelink
Centrelink has Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander interpreters available. Ring 132 316 and say “Aboriginal interpreter” or call through the Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS) on 131 450.
For health services
All public hospitals and ACCHOs must provide interpreters for medical appointments — for free. When you book, tell them you need an interpreter. MDAS, Robinvale AHS, and Swan Hill District Health can arrange this.
For legal matters
Courts and VALS can arrange free interpreters for legal proceedings. Tell your lawyer or the court that you need an interpreter before the hearing.
TIS National ( Translating and Interpreting Service)
TIS has Aboriginal languages interpreters. Ring 131 450 (24/7). This is free for Centrelink, hospitals, and government services. For private services, TIS may charge.
