How to apply for public housing in Victoria

For: Anyone needing housing in Victoria

📞 1800 825 955

How to apply for social housing, public housing, and community housing through the Victorian Housing Register if you are Aboriginal and living in the Mallee.

Ring Victoria’s homelessness hotline

If you are homeless or about to be homeless, ring 1800 825 955 (24/7). They will do a phone assessment and refer you to the right service.

Apply for the Victorian Housing Register (VHR)

Fill in the application at housing.vic.gov.au or get help from Swan Hill Neighbourhood House on (03) 5032 9238. Aboriginal applicants are given priority on the VHR.

List your choices of area

When you apply, you can list up to 3 areas where you’d like to live. For Mallee, you might list Mildura, Swan Hill, or Echuca. The more areas you list, the faster you may be housed.

Wait for an offer

Priority applicants (including Aboriginal people) are housed faster. Wait times vary — can be weeks to years depending on demand. Keep your contact details updated.

Moving in

You’ll pay rent at 25% of your income (public housing). Community housing (like Housing Choices) has different rent structures. Ask about this when you’re offered a property.
